Hoppin' for JunTos

The JunTos Foundation celebrated our 1st Annual Hoppin' for JunTos Pub Crawl on Saturday, October 16th. Proceeds from the event will benefit children with cancer and heart disease at Jackson Memorial Hospital. It was an absolutely gorgeous day in South Miami. An afternoon of clear, blue skies and a cool autumn breeze; the perfect mix of sun and fun for the twenty-one teams who came out in support. Teams were able to enjoy four pitchers of Miller Lite at five of the participating bars in the South Miami area. Followed by a rowdy After Party at Bougainvillea's with food donated by Sir Pizza. Guests were also treated to live music by Miller Road as well as a raffle provided by LINQ Financial, giving away a weekend stay in Bimini and some much coveted Miami Heat tickets. JunTos would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participating bars who kindly opened their doors for a great cause: Cervezas, Bougainvillea's, George's, Irish Times, RA, Segrafredo and Town. We'd also like to thank all our volunteers and bar crawl participants, without your support and generosity, JunTos would not be able to continue to help those in our community who are in need.
JunTos Hearts Halloween

On Wednesday October 27th, JunTos was fortunate enough to spend the day at Jackson's Cardiac Clinic, bringing Halloween fun and a much needed break from their everyday routine to the children undergoing treatment there. JunTos board members, dressed in costume, brought games, cupcakes (generously donated by LA Sweets), books, and plastic pumpkins filled to the brim with candy and goodies for the patients to enjoy. We also provided clowns, from Coqui Party Rentals, to paint faces and make incredible balloon animals. It was amazing to see these children smiling and laughing while getting their faces painted, playing tic tac toe or coloring together, despite being attached to IV machines or wearing hospital gowns for what seemed to be a long stretch of living in the hospital. Many of these children, some of who were infants, were at the clinic receiving dialysis; a very long and painful treatment given to patients who's kidneys are failing due to their disease. Others had recently received or were waiting for heart transplants. Sometimes, it takes a day like this, to remind us of how fortunate we are and how insignificant our everyday problems are compared to what these young men and women and their families are facing. It also reminds us of how many more are suffering from heart disease and it inspires us, at the JunTos Foundation, to want to do more to help them. Thank you so much to all the heroic patients, doctors and nurses we met at the clinic that day as well to the wonderful staff at Jackson Memorial Hospital who helped make the event possible.
Remembering Tavi

Octavio  J. Medina was born on June 6, 1976 and passed away on November 8, 2010 after a courageous fight against cancer. To all who had the privilege of knowing him, he was affectionately referred to as  "Tavi." Tavi was what every parent would want in a son and showed us that it is not the length of life, but the depth of life which truly counts. On one hand, he was kind, gentle, and loving. On the other, he was that hard working, determined, straight to the point kind of man. Tavi was the personification of courage and dignity while he valiantly battled his illness. He never backed down and always did what was asked of him. Many never believed he would play High School, let alone College Baseball. But he made believers of them all. Tavi is survived by his wife Erika, who courageously stood by his side and never wavered in her determination to support him and care for their beautiful daughter Amanda. His parents Luli and Octavio and brother Alex also showed the true meaning of unconditional love and support as their strength invigorated Tavi to fight for his life. Tavi was the recipient of the 2009 Courage Award given to an individual who shows exemplary courage and character when faced with extreme physical adversity. His body leaves us now yet we know that although death ends a life, it does not end a friendship. We love you Tavito, may you rest in peace. GO GATORS!!
